We start this series with a very basic topic – What is meant by leading a “healthy lifestyle” and why should we adopt a healthy lifestyle??
“Healthy Lifestyle” is a term commonly used these days. With an increase in various Chronic Health Diseases (CHD’s – Cardio vascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, cancer), the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle cannot be over emphasized.
Good nutrition, physical activity, stress free mind are the prime components for leading a healthy lifestyle. Increased stress levels and poor sleep patterns also exert a negative effect on our health.
“You are what you eat”,” you reap what you sow” are well known proverbs. Similarly, our health, our body will eventually become the way we have treated or cared for it.
Good nutrition is of paramount importance to lead a healthy lifestyle. Nourishing our body with the right kind of food is important rather than depriving or starving the body. Providing the right kind of food is the best fuel for our body to function at its optimum level.
The right blend of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals are required for our amazing machine to perform its diverse tasks every day. It is essential that we include healthy foods in our daily diet which would provide us with all the essential nutrients. This would help delay the onset of various lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, cancer and obesity.
Being physically active is imperative for good health. Consistent physical activity helps to improve cardiovascular health, boosts immunity and increases energy levels. Endorphins, the hormones related to happiness are released during any physical activity.
Mental Health: Healthy lifestyle cannot alone be achieved with physical activity and nutritious food. Mental health is the foundation of overall health. Sound sleep of 8-9 hours, exercise, meeting loved ones, meditation to relax mind lead to mental upkeep.
In a nutshell, adopting a healthy lifestyle• Helps in weight control
• Boosts immunity
• Delays or combats the onset of Chronic Health Diseases.
• Makes you feel good inside out – Boosts your morale.
• Delays ageing and improves longevity.
Changing to a healthy lifestyle is easier than you can think and is eventually gratifying. Making a small change at a time, creating micro goals and achieving them will help. Achieving this overnight is beyond thought, patience and consistency is required. Embracing a healthy lifestyle is something you will never regret!
